About Me

I am an individual stuck in a rut who loves to re-name her 21 cats in the cabin she lives in at the edge of that god-awful forest on the other side of China that no one can reach.

Jason Wu, your love from me has gone up 200%.

Sorry for the delay in posts. I hate finals. But, I guess the studying paid off. I got 100% on my math final. But I'm a history person...weird.

But, anyways, I fell in love with Michelle Obama's dress. It was FANTASTIC. I knew she'd probably pick a dress from Jason Wu or Thakoon, so I was happy with the choice. I died when I saw it. She was stunning!

What did you think?

Plus, while in school pre-inauguration (I was in World History. We were obviously watching something related to the inauguration), I said something along the lines of, "Oh my gosh! Her outift is so pretty!" That phrase just prompted one of my friends to freakishly blow up at me about materialism and how she hates fashion people. It made me think, "Is fashion just materialism?" I never looked at fashion from that point of view. Has anyone else had an experience similar to this? I'm slightly freaked about my encounter, if you ask me.

Thanks for all the fantastic feedback for the last post! Each made me smile.

Oh my goodness, congratulations on math! And she is beautiful!

Fashion is materialism, but you can think of it as a way of self expression. Its more materialistic to want a lot of clothes than to want to dress nicely.

the intro of "the meaning of sunglasses" by Hadley Freeman has this awesome quote in it:

"I just do not see that having a sharp brain and strong self esteem is incompatible with caring about how you look, and deriving pleasure from it"

Fashion is definitely not just materialism. Fashion expresses what you believe in, who you are, and the way you're feeling. It is the perfect way to express yourself and make a first impression that says something about yourself - of course, there is no way of expressing every facet of yourself in one outfit, but hey - every outfit should be a start.

Also, there is no way to categorise "fashion people"... Does appreciating the aesthetic value of a dress make you a vacuous, incapable, one-minded idiot?

So-called "fashion people" are often those who give fashion a hideous name - women who walk around with tacky guess bags, high heels and denim capris, their boobs falling out of their top, etc etc... because they are the ones who seem to give a damn about how they look, compared to the beige shorts and horizontally-striped t-shirt mum ensemble...

True fashion types (for the sake of this explanation) are no different to other "types" - computer 'nerds', sports 'freaks', etc etc. Fashion 'types' are extremely knowledgeable in their field of interest, or in some cases, occupation. Millions of people are employed by the fashion industry, and they know their stuff. Reading Influence by Mary-Kate and Ashley made me realise how incredibly smart and generally knowledgeable they are. They know a LOT... and these are girls who most people consider to be hobo-chic coffee-addicted child stars gone wrong, one of whom is possibly implicated in the death of Heath Ledger (gossip rags, I hate you).

Investing in, say, a Chanel handbag, may seem to be excessive to some - but then, I believe designer dogs are ridiculous, and that expensive cars are a waste of money. EACH TO THEIR OWN. It is a hobby, a fascination, something for people to pass their time by. It gives people the chance to express themselves, and allows us to be who we want to be.

haha, sorry for the massive rant... I might post this on my blog one day :)

AND - her dress truly was gorgeous!!

omg, i know exactly what you mean. it's like...appreciating fashion makes you less of an intellectual, or completely materialistic person. just because you said she had a pretty dress. ridiculoussss! that's like all of these peta activists that are angry with michelle obama for wearing a jason wu, because he said he wants to include fur in his next collection. so what?! what does that have to do with the first lady??? she picked the dress because she liked it, not because she was excited to be supporting a designer that likes to use fur. people really need to ease up on fashion a bit. although it is a serious business, when you take it too seriously, it stops being fun and fabulous.
